What started as a search for some of my first publications has led me to reading through the San Diego Reader of the early 1990s. It is, overall, astonishingly good. But then, there were alt-weeklies like it across the U.S. Almost all gone or hollowed out. Nothing has replaced them.

As tempting as it is to dismiss those who do nothing but post on social media, consider that they're a distinct minority, that where ever you work, no matter how liberal or even leftish its vibes, many or most are looking away. Right now even just keeping up is an action we need more of.
