one of the most memorable experiences I had in college was asking my organic chemistry professor a question and him saying "I don't know - let's find out!" and then talking me through a lab experiment.
If you think that professors exist as repositories of knowledge that students ask for answers, you’re missing the entire point of a college education.

We’re here to teach students how to do research, how to analyze and argue, how to think for themselves — how to find the answers on their own.
Wow. Just wow.

"Students pay premium prices for information that AI now delivers instantly and for free. A business student can ask ChatGPT to explain supply chain optimization or generate market analysis in seconds. The traditional lecture-and-test model faces its Blockbuster moment."

The destruction of American science continues apace. Early career people are the most likely to be seeking to leave. One of my about-to-graduate PhDs is seriously considering a job offer in Germany, even though it would involve lower pay. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Also worth noting that Welch only deployed that famous line because McCarthy broke an agreement not to publicly smear an employee of that same big law firm (Hale and Dorr).

If Welch hadn’t stood up for his junior colleague, we wouldn’t have that turning point for McCarthyism.
