Have you ever noticed that people who go to Dubai never come back saying what kind of cool museum they went to or what amazing cultural thing they actually saw? Even if you want amazing service, you can get better service at Claridge's. It just won't be a slave that did it.

Gen Z in Nepal burned down the parliament, burned down the homes of government officials, forced the prime minister to resign, and paraded the finance minister through the streets nearly naked.

Following up on yesterday's Autumn Colors prediction. We are having an unusual year with a pronounced cooling trend in the midwest and drought in New England. Read about it at Our Trees; your comments there are welcome. Thank you to @greenmtgirl.bsky.social for her comments.

As my forthcoming book will show, getting vertically-integrated monopoly utilities out of the generation business was critical to advancing state-level renewable electricity policy, especially in the 2000s. (1/)

Remember that most of the people in the National Guard want nothing to do with this and are, in fact, probably pretty pissed off that their governor ripped them away from their normal lives to do security theater miles away from home.
For the first time I've seen, National Guard outside the Library of Congress this morning.

They are unarmed and look incredibly bored.

(But seriously, the challenge for people who think Covid infections are the main story here is to explain why a comparable increase *hasn’t* happened for any of the 45+ age groups)

Treasury is required to produce a report to Congress related to Direct File, the free tax filing option that the current administration intends to kill. They've created a survey with a bunch of leading questions. The survey deserves some responses supportive of the program to counteract its framing:
IRS asks for public input on free tax filing options to inform congressional report | Internal Revenue Service
IR-2025-85, Aug. 21, 2025 — The IRS invites the public to participate in an anonymous feedback survey on tax preparation and filing options, which will run through Sept. 5, 2025.

reminder to blue state governors that hiring demoralized or fired FBI agents into security services that you control will likely be very useful in the near future
one of those instances where "we don't want to be here any more than you want us here" is literally true
FYI: the FBI is patrolling Columbia Heights along 14th St. and is not in a "taking questions" mood.

Great time to be junior faculty in social disparities, population health, and health outcomes research!
Heard from #AHRQ that the entire grants staff has been let go! They are unable to issue funds for grants already funded, let alone fund new grants. This is outrageous and will make Americans poorer and sicker. Why? A brief thread about just some recent AHRQ-funded research: #MedSky #HealthPolicy

The US shipped millions of tons of food to Japan in ‘45-‘46 amid a failed rice crop year!
pretty telling comment here. Britain and America absolutely did feed and clothe Nazi and Japanese POWs during WWII. and they provided food and supplies to occupied territories as the war was won. the Hunger Plan by contrast was a Nazi thing
