Just finished reading #sanctuary, the first novel written by my talented friend @tomgaisfordwriter.bsky.social.

The plot revolves around Alex an asylum solicitor desperate to make a difference for his very vulnerable clients in the cold UK asylum system.

Very highly recommended!

If you've ever wondered what you'd have been doing during the rise of the Nazis, now you know. You're doing it right now. What's happening... In the US, Donald Trump became president this week. Several of his first acts as president have seen him attempt to roll back the rights of minorities and the removal of climate change provisions in the signing of Executive Orders. After being surrounded by billionaires at his inauguration, Trump used one of his first executive orders to "only recognise two genders". In Trumps America, he wants non-binary and trans people erased. He has also called for an end to all diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in government agencies. Whilst immigrants are terrified of deportation and families risk being torn apart, people in diversity, equity and inclusion roles risk being fired and employees are being asked to snitch on their coworkers who may have a DEl element to their role. A terrifying note shared by NASA to all employees shared an email address for reports to be sent to. DEl initiatives give greater protection and security to employees where they may face discrimination based on their race, religion, sex, sexuality, gender. He wants all that gone. What you can do... Stay aware Stay aware of what is happening, both right now in the US and what's happening in your own country. Here in the UK we already have warning signs. Right wing party Reform are gaining support and in some current polls, they are challenging for being the leading party at the next election. We only have to pick up a newspaper to see anti-immigration or transphobic propaganda on a daily basis. Conservative MP Suella Braverman has been the latest to call for the UK to scrap the Equality Act. Such a move would have devastating consequences for minorities in the UK. It would mean that if you belonged to a protected characteristic, race, sex, disability, religion, LGBTQ+, you would no longer be protected by law. No protection if you're sacked for being gay, or sacked for being too old.
