Airbnb Deal with FIFA Puts LA's Affordable Housing at High Risk
LOS ANGELES, CA – On June 12, 2025, Airbnb and FIFA announced a major partnership positioning Airbnb as an “Official Partner” of the 2025 Club World Cup and an “Official Supporter” of the 2026 World Cup, both of which will be partially held in Los Angeles. This deal will promote the expansion of short-term rentals (“STRs”) into Los Angeles communities at a time of historically high rents and inadequate enforcement of existing STR regulations by the City of Los Angeles.
“Aiding and abetting Airbnb in its attempts to expand in Los Angeles puts rent-stabilized housing that Angelenos depend on at risk. The City has the tools and ability to enforce the law—they just have to develop the political will.”—Randy Renick, Executive Director, Better Neighbors LA.
Although the City of Los Angeles has implemented short-term rental regulations, the Los Angeles Home-Sharing Ordinance (“HSO”), it has failed to adequately enforce these regulations. As of April 2025, over 30% of STR listings in Los Angeles are non-compliant.[1] Instead of maximizing the enforcement capabilities of the HSO, the City has implemented policy that limits a violator’s financial exposure to just 10 citations, making it simply a cost of doing business.
The significant increase in STR listings, and concomitant reduction of long-term housing in Paris during and after the 2024 Paris Olympics, is a foreshadowing of what will happen in Los Angeles if the City does not take proper enforcement measures. Paris saw a 40% increase in STR listings around the Olympics,[2] with Airbnb listings reaching a total peak of 98,046 listings in July 2024. The numbers declined after July, but remained at over 90,000 listings in December of 2024, demonstrating a lasting effect on the availability of housing for tenants.[3]

Between the fires and these protests, I hope this year teaches everyone that most of the shit talking you hear about California and more specifically, LA, comes from racists and gentrifying transplants. Most people love living here and would do anything to protect it.
