OTD in 1942 the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal ends. US Navy Task Force 64 under Admiral Willis Lee replies a Japanese task Force under Admiral Kondo Nobutake. During the battle the Japanese battleship Kirishima is sunk by gunfire from the USS Washington (BB-56)
