One of the things we should ABSOLUTELY do when progressives hold the levers of power again is to allocate 0.25% or so from every federal program for a public service announcement campaign *about the program/service.*

People don't know what they don't know, but they often love it when they find out
Turns out the government was doing a bunch of great stuff with my money and I keep learning about those things because the republicans are killing all those programs.

Either the U.S. government *is* able to exert monetary and diplomatic pressure on El Salvador sufficient to produce Abrego Garcia’s release, or it isn’t.

The latter would be either a bald-faced lie or a pretty stunning concession of our national impotence. The Vice President should pick one.

A few years back a neighbor told me he was denied money from the state crime victim's compensation fund after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver and had to crawl out of the road on his hands and knees to avoid being killed. It haunted me and I've wanted to write a story about CVCs ever since. 🧵
Are State 'Victim Funds' Adequately Compensating Crash Survivors and Their Loved Ones? — Streetsblog USA
Crime Victims Compensation Funds across America are helping make the survivors of violent crime whole again. But too often, victims of traffic violence get left out.

We must all stand as a united front against the kidnapping and illegal detention of Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador.

Senator, I am willing to join you and help Organize other members of the House to do the same. @vanhollen.senate.gov

We need to give up the framing that they imprisoned a man in El Salvador “mistakenly.” Their actions prove this is intentional. Did they mean for this to be the trial run? Don’t know. But they’re running hard with it. That’s not a “mistake.” That’s fascism.

In defiance of the Supreme Court & without any evidence, the White House claims that Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a “terrorist,” who was “sent to the right place.”

This is a blatant LIE. He is innocent.

He cannot be allowed to rot in an El Salvadorian jail. He must be brought home.

I know you aren't going to want to hear this but the reason the system can deport Mahmoud Khalil and send Kilmar Abrego Garcia to El Salvador is that for years we've been executing factually innocent people like Marcellus Williams and sending legally innocent people to places like Riker's Island.

The U.S. says it doesn’t have the power to return Abrego Garcia.

El Salvador also says it doesn’t have the power to return Abrego Garcia.

It’s obvious bullshit and depraved to the core.
Pam Bondi: “That’s up to El Salvador if they want to return him…If they wanted to return him, we would facilitate it, meaning provide a plane.”

Nayib Bukele: “How can I return him to the U.S.? Like, I smuggle him into the U.S.?”

No, you put him on the plane the AG just said the US would provide!

When folks started talking boycotts, it didn't feel like there was much faith that we could make a difference. That was wrong.

Turns out there's nothing super special about shopping there, and it's easy to make other choices. I don't see why I should ever give them another dime. We moved on.
The divergence here from two companies with *very* similar customer bases is pretty wild, you do not see this sort of thing happen at scale very often.

Tomorrow’s going to be a good stress test of the press. El Salvadoran President Bukele will visit the White House. At the press availability, every Q ought to be about Abrego Garcia: where is he now? Did US ask you to return him? etc. WH will hate, maybe try to prevent, so all should band together.
