Planning & Zoning Commissioner, former Naperville City Councilwoman, runner, Everton fan (COYB). I sit through City Council meetings so you don’t have to. #TeamNaperville
The third of three budget workshops is Monday (6pm) and will cover the Operating Budget and Capital Improvement Overview. Staff was disciplined in their approach to this year’s balanced budget, reducing overall operating and capital expenses and keeping an eye on long-term trends.

What a difference a day makes! I was excited to see that the Healing Field was back on Rotary Hill for the first time since 2019, and took my run up the hill to recognize our Veterans. Thank you to everyone who’s served.

The 2nd of 3 budget workshops is Tues 6p. Staff did a fantastic job keeping a balanced budget of $685.13M. This year’s theme is the alliterative “Money with a Mission” & focuses on 5 trends: moderating revenues, aging assets, state legislation, staff investment, & national/global financial climate.

Council has a full docket with fall budget season, so this is a relatively short agenda. Of interest:
1. 2027 Priorities Plan presentation. Updates on Public Safety, Utilities, & Environment/Community Design.

I’ll be back on the dais Wednesday for my first Planning & Zoning (PZC) meeting. Three items on the agenda. It could be a long meeting.
1. DJK (557 S Washington) - converting a residence to their design studio. Needs setback & rear yard coverage variances to be able to provide ample parking.

SECA has come up at recent Council meetings. As the former council liaison, I have experience with the process. City staff and commissioners dedicate hours & hours of work to ensure a transparent and robust review. I covered a number of FAQs on my website.

Whoops! I missed mentioning the Sidewalk Program in my recap for tomorrow’s meeting. It’s buried in the Consent Agenda but will likely get some discussion. Most of the locations are in walking/running distance from my house so I checked them out before the September TAB meeting.
October 7, 2025 at 2:15 AM
Oh boy! There are a bunch of developments on tomorrow’s agenda. And… My appointment to PZC is up for approval, too! I’m allowed to serve in an appointed role, so I applied for the vacancy. (Clemen resigned in July.)

There are 3 projects that will get discussion.
1. Reserves of Saddle Creek.

(Not a) good morning commuters! BNSF trains currently delayed.

Council will swear in Supna Jain to take my seat on the dais Tuesday. I am grateful that they chose such a thoughtful and experienced person to finish my term.

So, what’s in store for her first meeting?

I wasn't surprised by the ULI 5th Ave presentation. It was underwhelming, but that’s not a bad thing.
Council Chambers was filled. People are paying attention & like being included in the process. What happens next? After ULI delivers the final report, Council will discuss. I see it moving slowly.

9/11/2001 is as vivid to me today as it was 24 years ago. I watched the TV coverage from my office building next door to the Sears Tower. After the second tower fell, building management evacuated the building. The silence on the El ride home to Lakeview was deafening. Our world had changed.
September 11, 2025 at 10:28 AM
Next stop, Council Chambers! On Wednesday night (9/10 7pm), ULI will present their recommendations for the city-owned land around the 5th Avenue Train Station. I look forward to hearing their answers to the questions Council gave them.

While it was not easy to step away, I’m truly grateful to have Supna finish my term. She’s smart, thoughtful, and brings valuable experience to the role. I’m confident that she’ll continue to serve Naperville well. #TeamNaperville

Tonight’s PZC will be the first of (at least) 2 meetings about the proposed Data Center on the Lucent site. The petitioner will make their full presentation, with public comment after that. PZC won’t deliberate until the public comment is closed, so there should be no vote tonight.
September 3, 2025 at 1:25 PM
This could potentially be a quick meeting, with only 8 items on the consent agenda. Here are some things that caught my eye, though I’m not sure if they’ll get any discussion.

Mind the gap! I am so bummed that I didn’t get to serve as TAB (Transportation Advisory Board) liaison for a longer time. Thursday 9/4 is going to be a good meeting.

A big thank you to the Naperville Police Department for implementing the Blue Envelope Program, which signals to officers that an individual communicates differently.

So, now what? Here are some FAQs about finding my replacement on the dais:
1. Does the Mayor choose? Any council member (including the Mayor) can submit a name(s) to be considered, and the entire council votes. It is very different from a board/commission, where the Mayor gets to pick.
August 23, 2025 at 1:25 AM
Sometimes things happen that are out of your control. Last night was my final City Council meeting as your councilwoman. I am taking a professional opportunity in the private sector which doesn’t allow me to serve in elected office.
