This summer a viewer contacted me. He’d bought the entire post-1954 archive of Voice Of America, what we now estimate at 100,000 LPs, all genres. His goal is to extract a jazz record collection for the ages, and a colleague and I have been helping him. The story so far. youtu.be/PnR9Bsm8aA8?...

New episode alert. This past week I interviewed Von Babasin, son of West Coast jazz stalwart Harry Babasin: bassist, jazz cello innovator, label founder, and an unwitting inspiration for the bossa nova craze in Brazil. Plus plenty of stories and detail about the LA jazz scene in the 50s.

Yesterday’s impulse-buy at Vinyl Envy Records in Victoria. 1979 black label issue. I didn’t leave the house with the intention of buying records, it just happened I swear. A brilliant record, breathtakingly play-it-three-times-in-a-row good. Cecil McBee sounds like he’s in the room. #jazzsky

Spun this tonight. I’ve had it for years amongst all my other Ninas, but had never really given it a proper listen. Wow. Sad, funny, brilliant, painful. What an epic, endless talent she had. A genre all of her own. #jazzsky #ninasimone
