Higher Ed dismantling DEI has implications beyond higher ed-the funding crisis is real but the stakes are even greater.
Universities that advertised their commitment to diversity in glossy brochures & fundraising campaigns now face a reckoning: was it real or just marketing? The admin bets they’ll stay silent to keep their funding. But the cost of inaction will be far greater.

From bad to worse/downright chilling
The NEA's new arts grants guidelines prioritize art celebrating next year's U.S. semiquincentennial, though not to the exclusion of other applicants. The bigger issue: All applicants must comply with President Trump's anti-DEI and anti-trans executive orders. www.americantheatre.org/2025/02/10/n...
New NEA Guidelines Require Compliance With Trump’s Anti-DEI, Anti-Trans Orders
Other updates include a cancellation of Challenge America grants and a new emphasis on patriotic ‘America250’ projects.

“The greatest children’s fantasies were worth your time when you were twelve, and they are equally worth it now. [Imagination] is deadly serious, the necessary condition of political change, of love. It is the sharpest tool of ethics.”

Some hope for right now.

While the federal nightmare unfolds, I am reading this beautiful piece by Katherine Rundell about the importance of children’s literature. It will actually give you a kind of hope.

Bluesky is filling up with writers, journalists, activists, celebrities, politicians—-are artists, cultural policy workers, art/performance critics, dramaturgs, producers and arts administrators out here? Is this a platform in which exchange of ideas and community for us works?

I anticipate being mostly a lurker on Bluesky but I’m here to say Krugman’s Substack is great (and
even a little funny). Between him, Miranda July, @hunterh.bsky.social, @maxread.info @annehelen.bsky.social and others I’m having a nice non-Meta experience.
