I live with a friend in this situation and part of the issue is that the challenges that mean she’s unable to do these things also mean it would be an overwhelming burden to talk about it publicly or to advocate for herself in the media
I wish we heard about mental health more from people who weren’t able to hold down jobs /pay mortgages.

I agree with this too, very much. The unspoken need for there to be a happy ending, a learning, an inspirational "but then I won a prize/had a kid/lost weight/looked really good" is the cage in which all public mental discussion is "allowed" to be held.
I wish we heard about mental health more from people who weren’t able to hold down jobs /pay mortgages.
