Differences in Alcohol-Related Variables Between Individuals Who Engage in Food and Alcohol Disturbance (FAD) Behaviors and Those Who Only Use Alcohol (new in @jsadjournal.bsky.social 86/3)

Differences in Alcohol-Related Variables Between Individuals Who Engage in Food and Alcohol Disturbance (FAD) Behaviors and Those Who Only Use Alcohol: The Role of FAD-Motives: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs: Vol 86, No 3
Objective: Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD) is the use of any compensatory behavior (e.g., skipping meals) within the context of a drinking episode. FAD has two underlying motives: to enhance the effects of alcohol (FAD-AE) and/or compensate for calories consumed from alcohol (FAD-CC). Prior work finds that FAD is positively associated with alcohol-related outcomes; however, it is unclear whether FAD confers increased risk above alcohol use alone and whether there are differences in alcohol outcomes by FAD-motive. Thus, the present study evaluated alcohol use patterns (i.e., past-month quantity/frequency, binge use, consequences, and drinking motives) by FAD status and FAD-motives. Method: Data were from the Stimulant Norms and Prevalence 2 (SNAP2) study, which included 5,809 undergraduates from six U.S. universities. Participants were grouped into four categories: Alcohol-Only, FAD-AE, FAD-CC, and FAD-both (i.e., both FAD-AE and FAD-CC motives). Ordinary least squares regression was used for drinking motives, and quasi-Poisson regressions were used for other outcomes. Results: Alcohol use quantity, frequency, binge use, and consequences were all greatest in the FAD-both group and lowest in the alcohol-only group, with the FAD-AE and FAD-CC groups intermediate and not significantly different from each other. To illustrate, the FAD-both group had 47%, 33%, and 25% greater alcohol-related consequences than the alcohol-only, FAD-CC, and FAD-AE groups, respectively. This stepwise pattern held for drinking motives, with fewer significant differences. Conclusions: Engagement in FAD is linked to an increased likelihood of poor alcohol outcomes versus alcohol use alone, and FAD for both motives represents the highest risk group.

Times are tough, but emails from prior students like the one below is what keeps me going!

"...Thank you for showing kindness in my times of need and for reminding me that I am capable of achieving the things I set out to do. You are an excellent teacher, mentor, and person!"

Just got this email. I have never been more proud to be a faculty member at my alma mater:

"A coalition of over 50 student organizations are holding a protest. We students have and will always value the faculty’s role as educators/mentors, and we recognize the invaluable service that you provide."

I am proud to lead @researchmj.bsky.social and am grateful to work with amazing scholars/leaders like @ericrpedersen.bsky.social (Editor-in-Chief of Cannabis). Please read our statement below about the science we will always welcome in our journal and organization!
Cannabis, the flagship journal of the Research Society on Marijuana, is committed to publish high quality empirical research, including studies that focus on diverse populations and topics (e.g., sexual and gender diverse groups). See full statement below.

The research world is in chaos, but we should still celebrate wins. This week my first ever undergrad honors student passed her clinical psychology dissertation defense. Further, one of my first grad students just accepted a position as an Assistant Professor. Very proud mentor!

A mentee just got this email after being offered a position last week🤬:

"Due to a presidential executive order, the NIH Intramural Research Program has paused interviews for all postbac positions. NIH investigators will be unable to interview you or make offers at this time."

Final grades have been posted and the semester is officially over. My first sabbatical has officially begun!

I look forward to catching up on research, grant writing, and traveling to see colleagues. Excited for my first trip in January to see my colleagues in Spain!

Today, I have reached 2 major research milestones:
1) 150 peer-reviewed publications
2) 200 peer reviews I have completed

Regarding my own pubs, this is a team accomplishment and I been fortunate to work with so many great colleagues! As for peer review, here is to many more!

As the kids get older, I get to introduce them to more movies. Tonight, we are watching home alone. I can't wait to see their reactions 😆.

Yesterday, my youngest turned 5 years old. Surreal feeling as I immigrated to the U.S. with my family at that age as political refugees. I can't believe how far I (and my family) have come since then and how fortunate my 3 kids are to have resources I never had. #blessed

Officially, my first ever case of being plagiarized in science. Albeit, pretty sure in a predatory journal but it is so blatant I had to post it. This is what hurts science and leads to mistrust from lay people about the work we do!🤬

I have posted fotos below as evidence!
November 30, 2024 at 3:57 PM
I am about to achieve two milestones: 1) number of publications and 2) number of peer reviews I have completed. I would argue that my number of peer reviews has a bigger impact. Shaping science and researcher ideas via my peer review creates greater impact. We need to value peer review metrics more!

Work-life balance is impossible. Balance assumes things are of equal value/weight. I love my 3 kids more than my job, so there will never be balance. I can't spend equal time on both, and that is ok!

I now strive for harmony. That change in mindset helped me realize it is not an either or option.
HEY PARENTS IN ACADEMIA!!!

What do you wish people knew about your experience and how parenting impacts you/your career/your science/etc???

I peer review a lot! Why? My rationale:

Part of my salary pays for me to conduct research. I view peer reviewing as part of research; thus, I do feel like I get paid (even if I wish more profit went to researchers and not publishers!). I also get to keep up with the newest research in my fields.

If you say yes to writing a recommendation letter, but then don't turn it in you are a terrible person. The fact that people's careers are getting screwed because of lazy, incompetent people who don't follow through is infuriating🤬.
