Interesting study from the Netherlands showing a preference for transport policies when presented as the existing norm rather than an alternative to it.

Argues decision makers should anticipate a bias towards the status quo (ie opposition to change) & support for policies to grow after adoption.
The role of status quo bias in shaping support for controversial transport policies: The counterfactual test
A biased preference for the status quo could explain the increased support for policies following their implementation. However, the influence of stat…

Four questions for people who say their driving is essential:

1. why is it essential to drive THAT car?
2. do you drive it as little as possible?
3. why is it essential to drive it that fast?
4. why do you need priority over people who aren't driving?

Just wanna point out that LibDem/Green Oxfordshire was the absolute centre of the 15 min city conspiracy and today the LDs have added 15 seats and the Greens have more than doubled so it’s hardly electoral suicide.

People like safe streets!

🤩 Not many better feelings than taking in some fresh cycle friendly infrastructure!

👏 The newly transformed Hammersmith Bridge is a great example of what can be done when river crossings service the people who need them.

Take note rest of London (East London 👀) because this is how it should be!

I know I should let this lie, but a thought that keeps occurring is how the government focus on cycling deaths feels like, say, a push on female violence. Yes, women hurt people sometimes, but it'd be fundamentally weird to start by cracking down on a marginalised group that is generally the victim
The only chart needed for today's news on road deaths and the law:

"We are all just temporarily abled" (-unknown) and

"We are all just one test result away from our lives changing forever" (-my Physician's Assistant former roommate)

are two quotes I share a lot, relevant to literally every class I teach on transportation, cities, health, and urban theory.
Disability is one of the few minority groups you can join at any time.

People believe they will be the exception & have trouble accepting they’re likely to become disabled at some point in their lives.

Work on internalized ableism. Engage in disability justice. It will benefit you in the long run

Why is there ANY debate? 🤦‍♀️

20mph in Wales meant about 100 fewer people killed or seriously injured in a year.

“There is, perhaps, a lesson here for politicians: sometimes it can be best to ignore the noisiest voices, and take the evidence-based course.”

Wales’s 20mph speed limit has cut road deaths. Why is there still even a debate?
Research suggests the scheme may be more popular than thought, with consultations dominated by a loud minority

Cars are getting 1cm wider every two years. That may not sound much, but over time it adds up, and they're showing no signs of slowing down 😬

That's #carspreading. Our new campaign is calling on city leaders to make parking policies fairer by varying costs based on the size of a car.

Why? 🧵1/8
