“ICE gets a bigger budget than the Marine Corps” is a simple fact that should be communicated very widely because it clearly expresses how crazy and radical this is
With this budget, ICE alone would have nearly as large a detention operation as all 50 states' prison systems combined. Bigger budget than the Marine Corps. Police-state levels of spending
If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:

- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.

One of my fav sunfish species. Common in floodplain lakes, yet we know very little about their biology.
LOOK at this stunner of an Orangespotted Sunfish!

Caught and released from a floodplain lake off the Minnesota River. Yes, freshwater fishes can be quite colorful too!

When leftists declare “the left” as incapable of organising, you’re giving up.

When we repeat the line “infighting is why we don’t win” we gloss over the powers that are against us as well as encouraging our political enemies to keep sowing division between us: which is VERY easy for them to do.

Affected in any way by recent federal science cuts? Please fill out and share a new survey to track impacts.👇

I'm unaffiliated but can vouch this is being run by a group of alumni of the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowship and USAID Science for Development Fellowship.

I feel this way too. I feel I should be posting about #hpbio, environmental ethics, conservation, 🌎 etc. And sometimes I do post on those things. But all of that depends on a functioning democracy & we don’t have one right now. Plus direct threats to the envt from 🪚&🍊. I guess this is my “apology.”
Some of his readers have asked Mike Masnick @mmasnick.bsky.social why his technology news site, Tech Dirt, has been covering politics so intensely lately. www.techdirt.com/2025/03/04/w...

I cannot recommend Mike's reply enough. It's exactly what readers need to hear, what journalists need to do.

Without #FEMA, smaller and less wealthy states would likely struggle to respond effectively to disasters. A #publichealth professor looks at why getting rid of FEMA would be a bad idea buff.ly/C6aTRTc (Ming Xie, University of Maryland, Baltimore County) 🌎 #climatesky #hurricanes #LAFires
If FEMA didn’t exist, could states handle the disaster response alone?
FEMA pools national resources to help states quickly manage disasters. Without that federal support, each state would be left to build its own expensive response capabilities.

With #bumblebees the size of the colony is in part determined by the length of the growing season in the region they inhabit.
In regions with shorter forage growing seasons smaller colonies tend to be maintained.
