Failed teacher here. For what it’s worth, I would add more open, non-prescriptive, play-based activity, and a reduced obsession with learning objectives. It was teaching Year 2 with NO space for pure play on the timetable that did my head in.

Obviously the first point is stupid, but schools are already doing the rest.
So what should schools do about this?
1. Don't fixate on grades. They dont matter as much as we're told.
2. Prioritise fostering warm, supportive relationships between staff and students.
3. Create an interesting, relevant & challenging curriculum.
4. Foster a love of learning

The implication that whole generations of teachers pre-2010 were teaching knowledge free curricula is equally laughable. When the NC was introduced in 1987-8, our internal audit showed 95% correspondence, with broad and balanced practice; minor tweaks.

3. So what’s the caveat? As you say, well-being, well-being, well-being. None of this should be at the expense of well being. P8 is the profit margin for the shareholders at the expense of the teachers and the products (students). It’s a complete nonsense and there are mounting casualties.

One can say they want a knowledge rich curriculum but in my experience it's the opposite, it's a very dumbed down curriculum. What kids really need is the motivation and skill to think for themselves and to be problem solvers. Critical thinking skills have fallen by the wayside.

Parents want a happy child before all else. To have silent corridors, detentions for not having a pen, being unable to take a blazer off if hot, locked toilets, not even being free at lunchtime, but having to have a set discussion & and then get told "but look at their P8 scores" is a nonsense!
