Hi everyone! I'm Adam, a literary translator/editor. You might know me as the Hungarian translator of the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson, but I've also worked on books by Jenn Lyons, Scott Lynch, and Christopher Buehlman among many others. 😊 I also love knitting, TTRPGs, and drawing maps. 😎

I've recently edited a wonderful pattern for Christmas stockings, and there's an open call for test knitters right now. ☺️ The due date is 2025-12-02, but it's a flexible deadline. See more info on Yarnpond: www.yarnpond.com/pattern_test...

I'm way behind on the TKGA's tech editing course, but I finally have time to work on Lesson Two. I'm checking some of my changes, and wow, what the heck was I thinking. 😂 #knitsky

Yesterday, I started restructuring the tech editing page on my website, to streamline it a bit, and to update the pricing. (Instead of an hourly rate, I will have a rate per word.) I love tinkering with the site, but boy, it's a lot of work. 🫠

I'm making some headway with one of my knitting projects: the sampler pattern from "Knitting Ganseys" by Beth Brown-Reinsel. I'm reading the book for my tech editing certification course at TKGA, and I'm also learning a lot about sweater construction and DPNs. So all in all, it's great fun. ☺️

Well, I guess that's it. Let me show you the heinous and abhorrent comment for which my account was first suspended, then disabled. I got Meta Verified (ugh, I know) to reach support, and while they seemed helpful people, and I'm sure it wasn't up to them, ultimately it wasn't worth the cost.

I've contacted Meta Support three times now about my suspended account, and all three agents have thanked me for being so patient and calm during our chat. I mean, they were genuinely helpful, and it's not their fault Meta is such a shitshow. 😐

I'm writing a blog post about what it takes to be a good translator, and I likened us to chameleons. Now I found an interview with my teacher from university, titled: "Translators are chameleons." Oh well, what a surprise. 😅

Nem mintha meglepne, de érdekes, hogy pont ma délelőtti cikk. (Az előzményekért lásd az előző posztomat.)

A Metát akkor sem érdekeled, ha fizetsz nekik
Az egyenlőség jegyében a Facebook pont ugyan annyira tesz mindenkire, akár fizetünk a szolgáltatásaikért, akár nem.

REMEMBER: All the "Don't use em-dashes" "don't use rule of three" advice because it makes your writing "look like AI" is because they stole actual writers work, and their "predict the next thing" stuff just simulates what WE FUCKING DO. Keep writing well. Use every style and trick you have. Fuck AI.

So apparently, anytime I post a comment in the Tech Editor Hub's Facebook group, Meta just decides to suspend my account. Who knew knitting was such a controversial thing 😂

Now that's how it's done. 😊
Hungary banned anything that “promotes homosexuality,” which means Pride.

However, today over 500,000 people in Budapest told the government to fuck off. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Csütörtökön kijött egy könyvbemutató YouTube-on, amiben én is beszéltem a Drizzt legendája: Képes útmutatóról. Ennek apropóján írtam egy blogbejegyzést a könyv fordításával kapcsolatban. Ímhol. Kommentelni ér, de csak itt, mert az oldalamon nem lehet.

Dear Bluesky literati, can anybody recommend me English language horror / weird magazines that accept translated short stories / will open submissions in the near future?

I finally submitted my Lesson One materials for the TKGA Tech Editing Certification Course. 🥳 I spent much more time on them than I wanted to; I could have been more productive, but sometimes things just take time, I guess. ☺️

Finally, a video about Hungarian goulash that I didn't rage quit after 2 minutes. I can't tell you how happy I am about this. 😀 @tastinghistory.bsky.social even pronounced "csipetke" and "bográcsgulyás" quite well! 👏 Well done, and thank you! 🙂

The Daughters' War (the one on the right) by @buehlmeister.bsky.social got published a few days ago in Hungarian, and I'm immensely proud of it as its translator. So dark, and so heart-wrenchingly beautiful. 🖤

I am so happy to be a part of this project as one of the four translators 😊 It wasn't me who came up with the title, but still, this article means a lot.
Over on Whatever today, I talk about how the translation of fiction from one language to another isn't just a matter of exact words, and why I now have it as a contract point that the translations of my novels have to be done by humans, not by machine or "AI":

Over the last few days, after much procrastination, I've translated most of my website into Hungarian, and it was a surprisingly enjoyable process. I like the fact that I can freely change some things. I don't know how the hero section will go, since it is a bit silly in Hungarian, but we'll see.

Seen a few folks astonished by my lack of support for ChatGPT and similar. Because AI, right?

Yeah, no. What we have right now is glorified autocorrect. Glorified autocorrect that takes the energy of an entire city to do what it does, plus half of Lake Erie to cool down while it's doing it.
