A rapid CRISPR test could completely transform the diagnosis of Pneumocystis pneumonia, a life-threatening fungal infection. Today it typically requires invasive bronchoscopy, but this test enables rapid detection from blood or throat swabs. www.jci.org/articles/vie...

Apparently the sharp selloff in US markets this morning is all about competition from DeepSeek on AI - not Trump's tariff belligerence.

The theme of the week: competition cannot be simply dismissed*

*see what I did there
China's DeepSeek sets off AI market rout
Nasdaq futures slumped and technology shares slid in Japan on Monday as surging popularity of a Chinese discount artificial intelligence model wobbled investors' faith in the profitability of AI and the sector's voracious demand for high-tech chips.

The language of “guilt” is such a giveaway here. It’s impossible for people who weren’t alive during the Nazi era to be guilty of what those people did, but it’s definitely possible for people today who empathize with the Nazis to feel guilty for those feelings.
“Elon Musk made a virtual appearance at a rally for the far-right Alternative for Germany party on Saturday, reiterating his support ahead of the country’s Feb. 23 snap election and telling the crowd that it’s time to ‘move on’ from ‘past guilt.’”
Musk tells Germans to get over 'past guilt' in speech to far-right AfD rally
The tech billionaire and Trump adviser has drawn rebukes for repeatedly endorsing the AfD in the leadup to Germany’s snap election next month.

An absolute no brainer to give this power to Mayors in England. Yet the Treasury is too cautious even to allow this.
Tourist levy to be introduced in Edinburgh from 24 July 2026. Expected to raise c£50m annually.

This means residents and tourists will “… see cleaner streets, they will see quicker removal of graffiti, better environmental improvements, more attractive spaces and better transport connections”

A tourist tax designed to raise £50m annually will be introduced to Edinburgh from next year.

This proposal - that the Treasury should sell index-linked defined benefit pensions, ie annuities, directly to the pub- seems quite reasonable/sensible to me. Are there any obvious objections?

Fascinating. In the 2000s both the USA & China were concerned about 'foreign oil' dependence. The US solved it via 'fracking' & China is trying via industrial policy/EVs. Interestingly, US oil demand has also peaked/plateaued due to general stagnation! www.ft.com/content/341f...
Has China already reached peak oil?
The country’s demand for crude seems to be plateauing sooner than expected. The implications are huge
