i have to say, as a trans journalist who has covered the "trans debate" for about a decade now, there is no daylight between how the trump administration and conservatives lie about tylenol and autism and how they've lied about youth trans care.

Great piece by Joan Wallach Scott about her father & others targeted by the McCarthy Inquisition, and - inevitably - the similarities of our institutions to today's right-wing moral panic.

Highly recommended.

This is why I never go to dinner parties
At a dinner party last night and found myself having to defend higher education against people - all well educated - parroting government lines about ‘rip off degrees’ and ‘value for money’. It seems the wider public have also reduced education to a financial commodity. We definitely are in trouble.

And this is one of the underestimated effects of increasing AI use.

What ChatGPT spews out is mangled out of actual sources, but without any understanding or clarity.

At the same time, it stuffs access to that material because the servers are overburdened.
BHO is having intermittent downtime at the moment.

We're being hammered by AI bots and scrapers, overloading our servers. Our server engineers will be back on the case after the long weekend.

Apologies for the inconvenience, but this is due to third-party bad actors.
