Alberta is continuing its push for data centres and hopes to see growth in the next 5 years. Given the AESO expects a generation shortfall in 5-7 years, data centres could be a real problem. High energy prices and poor reliability coming in 2030?

The new ROLR default electricity rate and the Premier’s plan for postage stamps distribution rates will see #Edmonton and #Calgary utility costs increasing. Coupled with the cost increases coming to auto insurance, it seems ‘affordability’ is a marketing exercise.
In Alberta, the AUC regulates the utility system. Despite overseeing a complex engineering system, no engineers hold leadership roles at the AUC. While some commission members are engineers, most leaders are lawyers.

In 2023, Alberta had 9 active coal mines producing 11.07Mt. Thermal bituminous and subbituminous coal (used for power generation) made up 7.4Mt (67%) and 2.93Mt (26%). Metallurgical coal (used for steel) accounted for 0.71Mt (6%).
