I like to tell this story because it's good to be reminded that it is not random that our voice-activated services were built to sound like women and be treated like slaves.

It was done on purpose, by people who knew better.

In the late 2010s, I was friendly with some people who were in the room during the meetings where Apple decided what its Siri should look and sound like.

They argued that voice-activated tools should not be built to sound like women because it would propagate misogyny. They were overruled.
Granted I am in no way the audience for this, but finding it hard to believe that part of the next wave is machines that speak unprompted.

Reread this short guide to responding to fascism in higher ed this morning.

I have very mixed feelings about how increasingly resonant it is proving to be, but also I hope it will prove helpful and maybe comforting as we watch current events unfold.

Solidarity with every NEH employee who is part of the Reduction in Force, and whose separation from the agency is being enacted today.
We guess that Monday miracle for #NEH employees won't be happening after all. Tomorrow over 100 staff and public servants of the #humanities will be terminated from their positions. It's heartbreaking and so completely unnecessary.
We know we’ve been more quiet on here lately. We’re hoping for a Monday miracle today, friends. We know so many of you are as well (for various reasons).

Although NEH has ceased to exist in its former glory for the past 59 days, tomorrow it becomes very real. (1/2)
