I have done the hard work of therapy and healing and growth. I have tried to love myself and my body more. I have worked to internalize, with varying degrees of success, that it was not my fault.
But the experience proved that at the end of “passing” is just being a woman. From pariah to property.

The years since have been very difficult. I have PTSD. I developed strong reactions to small and crowded spaces, public bathrooms, and male strangers. It has caused problems at work; I got fired from the first job after Denmark because I couldn’t even be in video meetings alone with male coworkers.

The bartender was a friend of a coworker who I had been out with, among others. By Monday everyone at work knew what happened. And our (male) head of production told me not to take any time off because it would cause problems for the project.

In mid-2019, when I was living in Copenhagen, a bartender locked himself in a women’s bathroom with me and sexually assaulted me. He did not appear to know I was trans, and I truly thought I was going to die in there once he found out. I escaped and ran out of the bar.
