It's not even blasphemous - it's just nonsense.

Because anything to do with bells is eye-wateringly expensive. Even to have our own six (Warner & Co, 1882) rehung – and, preferably, the tenor retuned because it's got one seriously bum harmonic – would probably cost something in the order of £50k.

I guess because bronze (a copper and tin alloy) is now horrendously expensive as a raw material, so melting down the tenor significantly reduces the cost of casting the new bells.
