Andreas J. Bäumler is a professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, in Davis, California. Dr. Bäumler studies the molecular mechanisms of Salmonella interaction with the intestinal mucosa. He is one of the leading researchers in the field of Salmonella research and has several highly cited publications on the topic of Salmonella infection, immunity to Salmonella, and the interactions between the host, the pathogen, and the intestinal microbiota during infection. Dr. Bäumler has a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from University of Tübingen, Germany. Since 2010 Dr. Bäumler is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and since 2020 of the Leopoldina. He is Editor in Chief of the scientific journal "Infection and Immunity." In 2021 he was awarded the Robert Koch Award for his pioneering work in understanding the regulation of the composition and function of our microflora by the cells of the intestinal epithelium. He became member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2023. Dr. Bäumler is a highly cited researcher in the field of Microbiology. .. more

Both MRC and BBSRC responsive modes now withdrawn until further notice. Existing applications unlikely to succeed (late 2025 round expecting 1-5% success rate).

Listen, I get that UKRI wants to pivot. But killing both at once is devastating.

Let's hope at least one opens by summer... #AcademicSky

I just leaned that my former postdoc mentor, Fred Heffron, passed away last week. I have fond memories from my time in Portland. Fred was smart, funny, and gave us the freedom to develop our own ideas. I am indebted to him for getting my academic career started in the US. Thank you and R.I.P.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

I don't think you non-science people realize what it takes to get a grant funded by NIH. Started experiments in Sept 2021 to generate 3 new mouse mutants to model human disease. Prelim dara shows they have relevant disease phenotypes worthy of study. Need a small grant first to characterize /1
And so on the last day of 2025, UC Davis overran its institutional Google Drive storage. And there was much lamentation, for no one could edit any documents.

Ancient humans crossing the Bering Strait into the Americas carried more than tools and determination—they also carried a genetic legacy from Denisovans.
