In 2023, after a wave of severe forest disturbance across Central Europe, we made a big group effort of surveying post-disturbance regeneration. It involved a lot of scrambling through brambles, but also a lot of fun (and reassuring to see a lot of regeneration). Happy to see the results published!
Central Europe has seen unprecedented forest disturbances recently, but how are forests recovering? We surveyed disturbance hotspots in 10 countries 3-5 years after disturbance, finding ample tree regeneration and no signs of forest loss (median 4750 stems/ha), but... 1/2 doi.org/10.1111/gcb....

We're hiring! In the Future Forests excellence cluster, we're looking for a postdoc in participatory modelling. If you like modelling but are also interested in transdisciplinary research and co-creation with stakeholders, this position is for you! 🌲🤝🧑‍💻 uni-freiburg.de/en/job/00004...
New paper - and final PhD chapter of @lisa-mandl.bsky.social - published in Agricultural and Forest Meteorology. Using Landsat recovery and meteorological data, we show that thermal limitations constrain post-disturbance recovery success across forests of the European Alps: doi.org/10.1016/j.ag...

"Closer-to-nature" forest management has been proposed as a way to reconcile biodiversity and ecosystem services, especially under a changing climate. But can it work? And how strong is the evidence?
In this paper, we synthesized knowledge from Central Europe:

Nice work from @kirstenkrueger.bsky.social showing that contrary to some beliefs, setting forests aside (i.e. not managing them) does not increase disturbances - unmanaged forests are actually less disturbed 🌲
Setting forests aside doesn’t stir up more trouble—in fact, it calms the chaos 🌳
Happy to see my first PhD chapter out! 📝
Setting aside forests for biodiversity conservation does NOT amplify disturbances in temperate forests of Central Europe.

I'm happy to share that I will soon be starting a new position as junior professor of Modelling of Social-Ecological Systems at the @uni-freiburg.de
I'm excited to start some new research on the interactions between forests and people, and will be hiring two PhD students...

Thanks for sharing! And for spotting the typo, the deadline is Feb 21st, 2025 of course :)

If you have any questions about the position, please don't hesitate to reach out!

In addition, you'll get to work with the great research team at the park and @edfm-tum.bsky.social with @rupertseidl.bsky.social - they not only do exciting research, but are also fun to hang out with 🧗‍♂️ ⛷️

I highly recommend it to anyone interested in research on interactions between people and nature, especially if you like mountains! Berchtesgaden is not only a beautiful place, but also a place with interesting (and complex) social-ecological dynamics.

Great talk from the brilliant @kirstenkrueger.bsky.social on why planting trees is not the easy solution to climate change - but there's still some hope for forests, too :)
